The ice creeper

This is our workhorse ice creep apparatus in the rock mechanics lab on the 7th floor of Building 54 (the Green Building) at MIT. It is a standard "triaxial" gas deformation rig housed in a cryostat. High-pressure gas (usually nitrogen) confines a jacketed ice sample, and a moving piston driven upwards from below imposes a deformation on the sample. The force gage measures the force applied by the moving piston. The intrument has a pressure capability to 1 GPa and temperature range of 77 K to room temperature. Piston velocities are controllable over 5 orders of magnitude, down to rates that are as close to geological as we can get in the lifetime of the average grad student.
